Which bubble style to choose
| Style | Example | Cases | Numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circled | Ⓟⓞⓟ ⓘⓣ | upper and lower | 0 to 9 |
| Filled Circles | 🅟🅞🅟 🅘🅣 | capitals only | 0 to 9 |
| Squared | 🄿🄾🄿 🄸🅃 | capitals only | none |
| Filled Squares | 🅿🅾🅿 🅸🆃 | capitals only | none |
| Parenthesized | ⒫⒪⒫ ⒤⒯ | lowercase only | 1 to 9 |
Outlined circles are the most widely supported and the easiest to read. Filled circles and squares are bolder but come from a newer part of Unicode, so older devices are more likely to show boxes.
Compatibility notes
Bubble text uses Unicode’s enclosed alphanumeric characters. These are Unicode characters, not a font file, so the circle or square is part of each character and the exact shape depends on the reader’s fonts. Current Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac devices display all five styles. The emoji letters mentioned above are the most visible difference between devices.
Like other styled characters, bubble letters are not read naturally by screen readers and are not matched by most search features. Use them for decoration, not for information people need to find.
Frequently asked questions
Do bubble letters work with numbers?
Circled and Filled Circles include the digits 0 to 9, and Parenthesized includes 1 to 9. Squared and Filled Squares have no numbers, so digits stay normal there. Each digit is converted separately, so 10 becomes ①⓪ rather than a single ⑩.
Why do some letters show up as colorful emoji?
A few enclosed letters are also emoji. 🅰, 🅱, 🅾 and 🅿 in Filled Squares, and Ⓜ in Circled, may be drawn as colorful emoji on phones while the other letters stay black and white. This depends on the device, not on FontWhirl. If it spoils the look, choose another bubble style.
Why are my lowercase letters turned into capitals?
Filled circles and both square styles only exist as capitals in Unicode, so lowercase input is shown as capitals. Outlined Circled letters have both cases. Parenthesized letters are the opposite and only exist in lowercase.
Are bubble letters the same as a bubble font?
No. A bubble font is a typeface with rounded, inflated letters. These are Unicode characters, each letter inside its own circle or square, and they are not a font file. If you need lettering in a real typeface as an image, use the font image generator.
