How to use it
- Type your bio, name or caption. Press Enter to start a new line, just as you would in the bio.
- Press Preview on any style to see it in the bio preview. Copying a style also shows it there.
- Keep an eye on the counter. Instagram bios allow up to 150 characters.
- Press Copy, open Edit profile or your caption in Instagram, and paste.
- Check your profile from another phone, since Android and iPhone draw these characters with different fonts.
Where to use it
- Bios with a styled first line and plain details below
- Display names that stand out in comments and search results
- Captions, comments and story text
- TikTok bios and Discord display names, which accept the same characters
Choosing a style that still reads well
A bio is read on a small screen in a second or two, so readability matters more than decoration. Bold Sans and Bold Script stay clear at small sizes. Small Caps gives a quiet, minimal look. Thin Script and the mixed alphabets look striking in a name but become hard to read across a whole bio.
A pattern that works well is to style one line, usually your name or a short tagline, and keep the details below it, such as what you do, where you are or a call to action, in plain text. Plain text can be found by search and read by screen readers.
The character counter
Styled letters still count as one character each in this counter. Some styles add more:
- Frames add their decoration to every line, for example ꧁ and ꧂.
- Line styles such as strikethrough add a combining mark after every character, roughly doubling the count.
- Emoji often count as two or more characters on some platforms, even though they look like one.
If the counter goes over 150, shorten the text or choose a style that adds no extra characters.
TikTok and Discord
The same characters work in TikTok bios, captions and comments, and in Discord display names, server names and messages. Both platforms have similar rules for usernames, which only allow a limited set of plain characters. Discord also has its own formatting for messages, so use its own markup there, such as two asterisks on each side of a word for bold, and keep Unicode styles for names and places without formatting.
Compatibility notes
The text is made of Unicode characters, so it looks slightly different on Android and iPhone, and a few characters may appear as boxes on older phones. Some filled letters in the bubble styles show as colorful emoji. Check your profile from another device after you paste.
Frequently asked questions
Are these Instagram's own fonts?
No. Instagram does not let you change the font of a bio or caption. These are Unicode characters that look styled, not a font file, so everyone sees them without installing anything.
How long can my Instagram bio be?
Instagram bios are limited to 150 characters. The counter here counts Unicode code points. Platforms may count some characters differently, especially emoji and combining marks, so leave a few characters spare.
Can I use these fonts in my Instagram username?
No. Usernames, the name after the @, only accept plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Use styled text in the Name field, your bio and captions instead.
Will fancy text in my name affect search?
It can. Instagram search may not match a name written in styled characters with the same name typed normally. Keep your username plain, and consider styling only part of your display name.
Are line breaks and emoji kept?
Yes. Line breaks are kept exactly as you type them, and emoji are left untouched. Frames such as the Vine Frame wrap each line separately, so every line gets its own frame.
Do these fonts work on TikTok and Discord too?
Yes, in most places where you can type freely, such as TikTok bios and captions and Discord display names and messages. TikTok and Discord usernames have similar rules and only allow a limited set of plain characters.
